I Can Make You Thin
March 9, 2008
There is a new TV show premiering on TLC next week called I Can Make You Thin. The host is Paul McKenna, a British writer, who uses hypnosis to aid in weight loss. McKenna helped Ellen DeGeneres quit smoking, and he has become famous for his methods of helping people kick their addictions. The show is interactive and supposedly the viewers watching at home can even lose weight. I think it sounds like a pretty interesting concept, and I’m thinking that I’ll be tuning in out of sheer curiousity.
Some people are saying that he is just a conman, but I’ve also heard a lot of great reviews. Any thoughts on if this could actually work…
Paul McKenna is a highly capable hypnotist, And hypnosis has ample evidence to support it’s effectiveness as an aid in a host of issues, including weight loss.
Mckenna is also a showman, which may be the source of the criticism that he is a conman.
As a hypnotherapist I have some misgivings about how Mckenna operates. Even the name of the show “I Can Make You Thin” bothers me, since a hypnotist can not make someone do something against his or her will. I can’t argue with his success. The title reinforces a common misunderstanding of hypnosis (see article on the truth behind the myths of hypnosis at http://www.ChangeDynamics.net)
Expect entertainment, expect to see the power of hypnosis, and for a large number expect to see result.
I’m also interesting in checking out what this show is about. Do you know what day it is airing?
The first airing is on Sunday, March 16th at 9:00p.m. on TLC. If you can’t make that here’s a list of other times…

Hmmm hypnosis…. kinda scary to me
i’ve seen on tv that hypnosis is not always working..it can only change your habits if it use in long time.
not too outrageous! willpower and showmanship. he’s quite motivating and he’s clearly helping those people that are listening to him…to create a different “association.” I think this is a good thing.. that is… if millions try and (most importantly) continue with the methods.
Yes I agree with that. You have to consciously follow and beaware of what you are eating on a day to day basis. How long are you be in a state of being hypnotized for? The occasional chocolate and ice cream is cool. All in moderation.
I’m not sure I believe in hypnosis. I’m kind of a skeptic when it comes to stuff like that. I saw a hypnosis perform once and the things he made the audience do were outrageous! I guess I would actually have to experience it myself to believe it…but that’s not going to happen!
i am gonna show this to my friend, man
After watching it, I don’t think that the hypnosis or psychotherapy are the main methods.
His 4 rules are genious in their simplicity.
